August 19, 2021 — Regional Office for Language in East Kalimantan Province and General Elections Commission in Bontang City held virtual meeting on Wednesday, August 18, 2021. It presented the Head of Regional Office for Language in East Kalimantan Province, Anang Santosa, and Commissioner of General Elections Commission in Bontang City, Saparuddin, as well as other commissioners, several linguists, and legal staff.

In his remarks, Anang Santosa expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the cooperation efforts of the parties. In adition, Saparuddin stated that KPU Bontang had high interest in cooperating on facilitating to study, review, and use of Indonesian language in documents which related to the process of general elections and local elections in Bontang City.

Saparuddin aspired to obtain related information to Regional Office for Language in East Kalimantan Province programs or activities that could support the implementation of KPU Bontang main duties and functions, cooperation opportunities, and follow-up plans. At that moment, Saparuddin conveyed several obstacles related to linguistics, such as Indonesian spelling usage, Indonesian language in official letters, and the use of language in public spaces, as well as dissemination of Indonesian use.

Finally, the parties agreed on several deals that will be followed up immediately. First, embody the cooperation plans between Regional Office for Language in East Kalimantan Province and General Elections Commission in Bontang City. Second, Regional Office for Language in East Kalimantan Province will provide linguists for linguistic consultation services based on General Elections Commission in Bontang City needs. Third, General Elections Commission in Bontang City will delegate the representatives to attend in Regional Office for Language in East Kalimantan Province program on linguistic competence improvement. Fourth, the parties agreed on plan exclusively to organize language competence improvement for General Elections Commission in Bontang City staff, commissioners, and will involve legal staff of KPU in East Kalimantan Province.

Those plans are expected to run well and become a synergy between policy makers in region. The synergy is expected as a real contribution of Regional Office for Language in East Kalimantan Province in participating to oversee the implementing democracy process in the region. (ak)
