Balikpapan, June 27, 2024 — The Regional Office for language in East Kalimantan Province (KBPKT) attended an invitation of coordination meeting from the Directorate of Basic Services, Deputy for Socio-Cultural and Community Empowerment of IKN on Thursday, June 27, 2024. The meeting was in the context of hospitality and discussion on the implementation of basic education services in the policy on improving literacy culture in the IKN. 

Molly Prabawaty, Assistant Deputy for Literacy, Innovation, and Creativity from the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia led the meeting. Several institutions attended the meeting, such as the Directorate of Basic Services, the Deputy for Socio-Cultural and Community Empowerment of IKN, the Agency of Education and Culture of East Kalimantan Province, and the Agency of Education and Culture of Paser Regency.

In the discussion, Halimi Hadibrata conveyed the notes on language development, fostering, and preservation in East Kalimantan and IKN. First, the need for intensive cooperation between the KBPKT, the IKN Authority, and the Government of East Kalimantan Province. Second, the need to maintain and realize the commitment to prioritize the state language in the IKN and East Kalimantan. Third, the need to accelerate the teachers’ readiness and reading materials in regional language. Fourth, the need to realize the preparation of a governor’s regulation as a mandate of Regional Regulation of East Kalimantan Number 8 of 2023 on the Development and Preservation of Regional Languages and Literatures.

The KBPKT provided several evaluation notes related to the implementation of literacy in East Kalimantan and IKN. First, need to accelerate the digital literacy in IKN and East Kalimantan. Second, in fostering literacy in the regions, need to group based on the character of the regions, namely urban, medium (district), and frontier, outermost, as well as underdeveloped (3T) areas. Third, increasing library visits by adding visiting hours (Saturday and Sunday). Fourth, related parties need to provide equal access solutions to the problem of internet networks, such as in Mahakam Ulu Regency. Fifth, all parties need synergy to provide language education that has legal implications, such as insults, defamation, threats, and SARA as well as critical thinking skills in IKN and East Kalimantan.
